The open circuit can be detected with an IR camera because there is a significant temperature difference between the solar cell strings.

4. Micro Cracks On Solar Cells Reduce Energy Production

Progress in semiconductor processing has resulted in extremely thin solar cells with a thickness of around 170 μm, which is roughly twice the diameter of a human hair.

This leads to extremely brittle solar cells, which are prone to cracking from any strong exposure.

When microcracks form in a solar panel, the affected solar cells have difficulty conducting electrical currents, resulting in poor energy production and hot spots.

5. Broken Glass Makes Solar Cells More Private To Weather Damage

The front glass pane of a solar panel represents the first line of defense against weather influences such as rain, dust, hail and the occasional stray golf ball.

A junction box on the back of a solar panel is the most important interface for conducting electricity to the outside.

If water or dust gets into the housing of the junction box, the bypass diodes in it can short-circuit and burn out.

A burnt bypass diode or a burnt connector can leave the panel in an open circuit and completely prevent the transmission of energy to the outside.

8. Snail Tracks Can Be Signs Of Micro Cracks

If solar cells are broken, the cells continue to generate electrical current along the cracks, the resulting local heat can degrade the cell surface and EVA.

If water vapor is also present, discolored snail tracks will form along the microcracks, which not only reduce energy production but also affect its appearance.

The best way to reduce snail tracks in solar panels is to choose reliable encapsulation materials to prevent water vapor from entering the laminate and to handle the panels carefully to prevent microcracks from forming.

Solar panels are usually connected in long rows to generate a high system voltage, sometimes up to 1000 V, and to drive solar inverters.

The high voltage difference between the grounded frame and the solar cells may be too large for poor quality solar cells and the degradation will begin to deteriorate.
