Victorian Government Give a Rebate for Solar Hot Water

The Solar Homes Program solar PV rebate assists are eligible Victorian households to install solar panels. Not-for-profit community housing providers are also eligible to apply for the rebate on behalf of the tenants. 

There is additional assistance offered including no-interest loans to complement the rebate, as well as solar panels for rental properties and solar battery rebates.

The program provides eligible victorian government solar hot water rebates of up to 50% of the purchase cost to install solar PV panels. The rebate is up to $2225, currently half the value of an average 4kW solar panel system.

Australia’s national “solar rebate” has been with us for almost a decade. The details of how it works are complicated (I explain it in detail here) – but the effect for Australian homeowners is very simple. It makes solar systems cheaper to buy. Typically one-third cheaper than they’d be without the rebate.

Whenever you see an ad for solar power, the advertised price will already include the rebate. For example, a system on sale for $6,000 is actually worth closer to $9,000. The installer claims the rebate on your behalf when you buy a system, so you only pay the advertised price.

This solar rebate is a national, federal scheme.

To be eligible for this incentive, you must:

• have a combined household income of less than $180,000 per annum before tax
• be an owner-occupier of a home valued at under $3 million
• be replacing an existing hot water system that is older than 3 years from the date of purchase
• have an eligible hot water system installed on or after 19 August 2018
• choose a product that is on the Clean Energy Regulator’s Register of solar water heaters

Solar Homes Package Details

Reported from Solarquotes, In August 2018, the Victorian government Announce the victorian government solar hot water rebate scheme: the ‘Solar Homes Package‘.

The value of this Victorian rebate from July 2020 is ‘up to’ value of $1,850 or 50% of the price; whichever is lowest. So:

• if you buy a solar system for $3,000, you can apply for a $1,500 rebate
• if you purchase a system for $4,450 you can apply for the maximum $1,850 rebate
• if you buy a system for $6,000 you can only apply for a $1,850 rebate – because it’s capped.

You are eligible if you live in a home worth under $3 million with a household income under $180,000. That’s 9 out of 10 Victorian homeowners. Victorian government solar hot water rebate is on top of the Federal scheme.

So if you buy a solar system advertised at $4,450 (which would typically be 4-5kW of panels) then claim the Victorian rebate of $1,850, is actually getting a system worth $6,690 (remember the Federal rebate was already applied to the advertised price) for $2,600.

Is it worth having solar panels in Victoria?

When you use solar power to heat your water you may find that you will need to purchase a solar powered water heater in order to do that. You may be able to make adjustments to your existing one but whatever steps you take to turn it into solar power it will be worth it.

There are several different ways to heat your water using solar power. You can even make your own solar power source. The water runs through pipes before it enters your home. 

Heating water using solar power will occur before the water gets into your home as it passes by the solar source that attracted the light. You may also have a tank to store the water in that can heat the water up. In order to heat your water successfully, you will need to have both a solar collector and a storage tank.

A flat plate collector is the most common collector. It is designed to be a thin, flat rectangular box that has a see through cover and it can carry fluid to be heated. This fluid could be the water or it may be a solution, such as antifreeze that will prevent the water from freezing. 

Next, the water moves through the tubes to an absorber plate. This plate is painted black to attract and absorb the heat from the sun. When the collector gets hot, it will heat the fluid that passes through the tubes. As the water passes through the tubes it goes into the storage tank. The storage tank holds the heated water. It is usually well insulated so the water will stay warm longer. Then the water flows into the home on demand.

Active and Passive Solar Water

Solar water heating systems are divided into two groups: Active and passive. When the heating systems are active, that means that they rely on the pumps or other mechanical devices that can move the water between the flat plate collector and the storage tank. Active is the most common because it is quicker and more efficient.

The passive system relies on gravity to feed the water from the flat plate collector to the storage tank. This may be slow at times and may not be sufficient enough to keep up with the demand.

Both ways are logical and maybe more of a choice of preference for you. Another thought that you need to consider is that if your flat plate collector and your storage tank are not angled right it may be hard for the gravity to feed the liquid through.

Heating water using solar power is very affordable and can be installed with minimal effort. Choosing to heat your water using solar power is a wise choice and a first step in making a choice to help preserve our environment.
